107th Indian Science Congress: Prof. Rao gives away prizes to winners of ISRO Essay writing competition

On the second day of 107th Indian Science Congress, being held in Bengaluru, wide range of activities were held today spreading across the varied spectrum. The activities ranged from public lectures by professional speakers to a meet by former Vice-Chancellors on the future of higher education.

As part of the National Science Congress, the Rashtriya Kishore Vaigyanik Sammelan was inaugurated by the Nobel Laureate Prof. Ada Yonath and Bharat Ratna awardee Prof C.N.R. Rao today. Speaking during the inaugural event, Prof. Ada Yonath said that as a child she wanted to pursue science as a hobby. She asked the younger generation to develop curiosity and be prepared for the unexpected.

CNR Rao called upon youngsters to take pride in doing Science. He said empowering science will empower the country. He noted that there are crores of children in villages and many have extraordinary minds, who can be great scientists if given an opportunity. He pointed out that dedication, doggedness and tenacity are qualities of being a good scientist. 

Right mind and hard work are more essential than the degree and money to succeed in Science. He gave examples of Indian scientists such as Ramanujam, C V Raman and J C Bose who achieved excellence in Science without any support of infrastructure and funds.

Later Prof. Rao gave away prizes to the winners of ISRO Essay writing competition. Pooja Tamta from Riverain Public School in Dehradun shares her joy over receiving the award from Prof Rao.

Another winner of the Essay writing competition Anhad Singh from St. John High School in Chandigarh has this to say about his academic choice.

The Essay writing online competition held by ISRO was on the theme, “How two years of scientific progress in India influenced them”.
