Vice President Venkaiah Naidu says Prime Minister has given a call for doubling farmers’ income by 2022. He said if the target is to be achieved, focus should be on agro-based industries and other non-farm avenues for generating income. The Vice President was speaking at the 40th foundation day of the Institute of Rural Management (IRMA) in Anand district of Gujarat today. He highlighted the role of technology and entrepreneurship in opening up new business avenues in rural India.
The Vice President said India is on track to become a 5-trillion dollar economy, adding that contribution of rural India will be vital to achieving the target. Mr Naidu said confluence of technology, supply chain, commerce and financing can revolutionalise farmers’ lives. Regional disparities in development need to be addressed to make India’s growth story inclusive.
Recalling the work of Verghese Kurien, the Vice president stressed on the need for women empowerment in rural areas. He also emphasised that rural enterprises be made an attractive career for both rural and urban youth. Mr Naidu hailed the contribution of IRMA in rural development and asked the institute to make Mahatma Gandhi’ vision of Gram Swaraj a reality.
Earlier this morning, the Vice President visited National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) campus at Anand. Mr Naidu will be present at the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of Charutar Vidya Mandal as the Chief Guest later today.
The Vice President will attend the convocation of Sardar Patel University at Vallabh Vidyanagar tomorrow morning. Later, Mr Naidu will confer the President’s Police Colours to Gujarat police at the Police Academy in Karai of Gandhinagar. In the evening, the Vice President will proceed for Dhordo in Kutch, where he will participate in the ongoing Rann Utsav.
