United States President Joe Biden has said that he is to receive a detailed report today about the role China’s civilian intelligence agency played in using ransomware to extort American businesses. He was responding to reporters about why no sanctions against Beijing immediately followed his government’s public accusation that China’s Ministry of State Security used criminal contract hackers to conduct unsanctioned cyber operations globally. Mr Biden said yesterday in White House that the investigation is not finished and is still determining exactly what has happened.
The United States, along with NATO, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zealand yesterday blamed China for a cyberattack in March that affected tens of thousands of organizations across the globe via Microsoft Exchange servers.
US National Security Agency, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in a joint advisory, also said that they have observed increasingly sophisticated Chinese state-sponsored cyber activity targeting US political, economic, military, educational, and Critical Infrastructure personnel and organizations.
