US emphasises diplomacy in standoff with Iran after Saudi oil plants attack

US says it will make its case against Iran at the United Nations this week and insisted that Washington wants to give diplomacy every opportunity to succeed in the wake of an attack on a vital Saudi oil complex.

Setting the stage for President Donald Trump’s address to the annual UN General Assembly tomorrow, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo put aside threats of US military retaliation against Iran for the attack.

Mr Pompeo in an interview with ABC, said President Trump and he want to give diplomacy every opportunity to succeed. However, he also said, if US is unsuccessful in this effort and Iran continues to strike out, he is confident that President Trump will make the decisions necessary to achieve their objectives.

Meanwhile, President Trump yesterday once again left open the possibility of an unscheduled meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly with Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani.

On the other hand, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour tweeted that Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif told her that Mr Rouhani was willing to meet with Mr Trump in New York this week provided that he is ready to do what’s necessary.
