UNSC calls for dialogue between Iran and US to end tensions in Gulf region

UN Security Council has called for a dialogue between Iran and the US to end tensions in the Gulf region.

But Iran rejected talks with the United States after its President Donald Trump imposed fresh sanctions on it.

In a press statement drafted by Kuwait, the council condemned the recent attacks on oil tankers and called them a threat to international peace and security.

The council, however did not single out Iran but appealed to all sides to back away from a military confrontation. Iran’s UN ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi told reporters in Washington that the conditions were not ripe for dialogue with United States.

The joint stance from world powers came just hours after Trump administration slapped new sanctions on Iran. Britain, France and Germany separately called for de-escalation and dialogue, with full respect for international rules.
