Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today expressed concern on the deaths due to suicides by students in Kota, Rajasthan and said that such incidents should be brought to nil. Replying to supplementaries during the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Pradhan, however said that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data shows that there has been one lakh 70 thousand 924 cases of accidental deaths and suicides in the year 2022, out of which only 1.2 per cent cases pertains to deaths which are in connection with failure in examinations.
Shiv Sena (UBT) Priyanka Chaturvedi had raised the question in the upper house and had asked for a separate agency to compile data on students suicide who are appearing for the competitive exams.
The Minister said termed it as “Kota Syndrome” and said that the Centre as well as UGC has issued advisory on mental health of students. He said the Government has been implementing initiatives like Fit India and Khelo India to strengthen the mental health of students.
