Jackfruit hit by lockdown; price drops to Rs 10 per kilo in Vishu season

Koduvayur (Palakkad): The COVID lockdown gave a severe blow to jackfruits by bringing its price very low during Vishu season. Jackfruit was sold for Rs 10-12 per kilogram in Koduvayur market on Saturday. Last year, the price was Rs 20-25 and it was reduced to half this time.

About 1000-1500 jackfruits were brought for sale during Vishu season for past six years. But this year, only 200 jackfruits were harvested. The merchants had already paid upto Rs 1000-2000 for harvesting one jackfruit tree in view of the Vishu market and they will now face huge loss.

The merchants are harvesting jackfruit from only nearest places in order to avoid transportation charges. When the labour charge of tree climbers, rent of vehicle and price of jackfruit are added, the merchants are not likely to get even the invested amount by selling the fruits for such a low price.
