The changes and challenges to justice in the time of COVID-19

World Day of Social Justice 2021 Theme: A Call for Social Justice in the Digital Economy:- The digital economy is transforming the world of work. Over the past decade, expansion in broadband connectivity, cloud computing, and data has led to the proliferation of digital platforms, which have penetrated several sectors of the economy and societies. The COVID crisis has also laid bare and exacerbated the growing digital divide within, between and across developed and developing countries, particularly in terms of the availability, affordability and use of information ICTs and access to the internet, deepening existing inequalities.

The role the justice system has to play in the coming time will be of even greater significance. The elongating COVID era, beyond creating additional internal strains for the delivery of justice. Widening income disparities, competition for scarce resources will all create ever more demand for justice, compensation, restitution, and speedy processes and fair civil and criminal outcomes. The world must act now to anticipate the consequences of the virus and adapt itself to the needs of individuals and communities and ensure that basic human rights and justice for all are upheld, Keeping equality, empathy and humanitarianism at its core.

Tech in Judiciary- The pandemic has highlighted the need for speedier incorporation of technology into the justice system. Although restricted to examining only some pre-COVID applications, the increasing reliance on technological solutions prompted the inclusion of video-conferencing facilities and online services all around the globe.

For access to Justice, various Key Initiatives were launched in India during COVID-19. India launched the world’s largest vaccination programme on January 16. In the first phase, India began vaccinating health workers without any discrimination and prioritising the much-deserved community frontline health workers- COVID Warriors. India even assisted several countries through urgent health and medical supplies. The whole world recognised India’s efforts to support the global community to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The equality gap remains somewhat wider for migrant workers, though there is an increasing global awareness of their predicament. The government launched an employment scheme with an outlay of Rs 50,000 crore for migrant workers who returned to their home states during the coronavirus-induced lockdown. Immediate arrangements for the migrant workers’ transportation, food and shelter free of cost were made.

Vande Bharat Mission was launched to repatriate citizens stranded due to the lockdown to combat the coronavirus outbreak in order to facilitate the easy return of Indian nationals.
