Strong earthquake hits off Japan coast, injuring dozens and triggering blackouts

In Japan, dozens of people injured as a strong earthquake hit off the eastern coast and triggered widespread power outages yesterday.

The earthquake had 7.1 magnitude and its epicenter was off the coast of Fukushima prefecture at a depth of 60 km. Houses and offices also swayed and shook in the capital Tokyo which is hundreds of kilometers away.

At least two dozen people were injured. Japan Meteorological Agency said that there is no threat of a tsunami and no warning has been issued.

Earthquakes are common in Japan as the country is one of the world’s most seismically active areas. Japan accounts for about 20 percent of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.
