Sri Lankan Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has rejected allegations by President Maithripala Sirisena that he favoured an official, accused of wrongdoing.
Mr. Wickremsinghe in a statement issued today termed the allegations as baseless and said he had never acted in contravention to the constitution.
His comments came as President had accused Mr. Wickremsinghe of recommending an accused official for the post of Supreme Court judge.
The Sri Lankan PM said he is unaware as to why President is directing accusations against him in this manner following the announcement of the Presidential election.
He further said that if he or any of the ministers have any allegations levelled against them, it is best to discuss it within the confines of the Cabinet.
Relations between the two leaders had nosedived after President attempted coup last year in which he replaced Mr. Wickremsinghe.
Both also traded charges during the past couple of days over who was responsible for the emergency cabinet meeting called on Thursday to discuss the abolition of executive Presidency.
The Presidential elections are scheduled for November 16th where Prime Minister’s party is yet to finalise a candidate while the President’s party is undecided over whom to support.
