Champions League final relocated
European soccer’s governing body voted to move this season’s Champions League final, the showcase game on the continent’s sporting calendar, to Paris in wake of the Russia-Ukraine crisis. The decision has received support from French President Emmanuel Macron but was met with regret by the Kremlin (the executive branch of the government of Russia, especially in regard to its foreign affairs).
The game was scheduled for May 28 in St. Petersburg, in a stadium built for the 2018 World Cup and financed by the Russian energy giant Gazprom. Now, It will take place at the Stade de France, in the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. The decision has been the result of the grave escalation of the security situation in Europe.
Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic have refused to play World Cup qualifiers in Russia. UEFA has said that the home games of Ukrainian and Russian club and national teams competing in UEFA competitions would be played at neutral venues.
In the interest of the safety and integrity of the competition, the Five World Cup skiing events that were scheduled to take place in Russia next month have been cancelled or moved by the International Ski Federation (FIS).
