SC seeks Central govt’s response in appeal against Delhi HC’s split verdict on marital rape

The Supreme Court today sought the Central government’s response in the appeal against Delhi High Court’s split verdict on marital rape. A bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and B.V. Nagarathna issued notice on a batch of petitions filed on the verdict.

A division bench of Delhi High Court of Justices Rajiv Shakdher and C. Hari Shankar had delivered a split verdict in the case with Justice Shakdher striking down the exemption to marital rape and Justice Shankar upholding it. The Apex Court has agreed to hear the issue in the month of February next year and clubbed all the matters regarding the issue of marital rape pending in the Supreme Court together.
