SC order on decriminalising politics will help set new moral yardsticks: EC

The Election Commission will implement the directions of Supreme Court concerning criminal antecedents of candidates by reiterating its existing instructions with suitable modifications.

The Commission said, in a press release issued in New Delhi on Friday, it whole-heartedly welcomes the landmark order, which is bound to go a long way in setting new moral yardsticks for overall betterment of electoral democracy.

The Poll panel said, earlier, on 10th of October, 2018, it had issued detailed instructions and guidelines along with amended form of affidavit for ensuring publicity of criminal antecedents by the candidates and the concerned political parties for the information of voters. It said, this is being implemented in all the elections since November, 2018.
