Pope Francis has died following a prolonged illness. He was 88. He had suffered various ailments in his 12-year papacy, with severe complications in recent weeks. Pope Francis is known as the voice for the poor who reshaped the Catholic Church. Pope Francis became the first Latin-American pontiff in 2013 and was one of the oldest popes in the church’s history.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the demise of Pope Francis and conveyed condolences to the global catholic community. In a social media post, Mr Modi said, the Pope will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world. Prime Minister said that from a young age, the Pope devoted himself towards realising the ideals of Lord Christ. He added that Pope Francis diligently served the poor and downtrodden and ignited a spirit of hope for those who suffered.
Mr Modi recalled his meetings with the Pope and said that he was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and all-round development. Prime Minister added that Pope Francis affection for the people of India will always be cherished.
