Pope Francis dies after prolonged illness, PM Modi expresses grief, remebering him as beacon of compassion

Pope Francis has died following a prolonged illness. He was 88. He had suffered various ailments in his 12-year papacy, with severe complications in recent weeks. Pope Francis is known as the voice for the poor who reshaped the Catholic Church. Pope Francis became the first Latin-American pontiff in 2013 and was one of the oldest popes in the church’s history.

In a social media post, Mr Modi said, the Pope will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world. Prime Minister said that from a young age, the Pope devoted himself towards realising the ideals of Lord Christ. He added that Pope Francis diligently served the poor and downtrodden and ignited a spirit of hope for those who suffered.

Mr Modi recalled his meetings with the Pope and said that he was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and all-round development. Prime Minister added that Pope Francis affection for the people of India will always be cherished.
