Due to gap in post harvest Infrastructure facilities, Indian farmers and consumers were taking a huge hit as middlemen reaped huge profits by providing infrastructure facilities to preserve farm produce. The government released latest data on Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana implementation which shows that infrastructure had been created on a large scale for efficient supply chain management.
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana primarily aims at creation of integrated cold chain and preservation infrastructure facilities with efficient supply chain management from farm gate to retail outlet. Though there are many sub-schemes to achieve this, it is mainly accomplished through the Mega food park scheme. Mega Food Parks typically consist of supply chain infrastructure including collection centers, primary processing centers, central processing centers, cold chains and around 25-30 fully developed plots for entrepreneurs to set up food processing units.
PMKSY also includes a scheme for creation or expansion of food processing capacities. Further the scheme can play a huge role in ensuring the quality of food products manufactured and sold in the market as it supports the creation of Food Safety and Quality Assurance Infrastructure. Government provides credit linked financial assistance (capital subsidy) in the form of grants-in-aid to stakeholders for setting up of food processing industries/ units/ projects.
PMKSY implementation so far
Under different sub-schemes of PMKSY, the Ministry has approved 853 projects for setting up food processing units, with a total cost of Rs. 21,058.29 crore and approved grants-in-aid of Rs. 6,673.74 crore, of which Rs. 4,444.25 crore have been released so far. These projects entail processing and preservation capacity of 216.81 lakh MT per annum and 70.014 lakh MT per annum respectively, benefiting 41,42,917 farmers and generating 10,61,361 employment.
Such infrastructure facilities enhance our chances of dominating the world food market. Following the trend set in FY 2021-22, agricultural and processed food exports rose by 14 percent in the first three months of FY 2022-23 (April-June) compared to FY 2021-22. SAMPADA is a digital platform through which various projects sanctioned under different sub-schemes of PMKSY are monitored. Applications for receiving grants may be submitted online at https://sampada-mofpi.gov.in as per the revised operational guidelines available on www.mofpi.gov.in. Eligible promoters or investors or entrepreneurs should submit their online application by 5 pm on 10 August, 2022.
