A major relief has been granted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to aspirants who want to become Assistant Professors. The condition of holding a PhD degree at the time of recruitment has been removed. In recent years, UGC has made a number of changes to education as well as the recruitment system, making things easier and smoother for students and faculties.
According to the HS, UGC Chairman Prof M Jagadesh Kumar has made the announcement. Clearing National Eligibility Test (NET) would suffice for being an assistant professor; a newspaper reported quoting the UGC chief. Jagadesh made the announcement while delivering the inaugural address of the newly constructed UGC-HRDC building at Osmania University. The UGC shared the update via the official Twitter handle.
Earlier, talking to the PBNS, the UGC chairman had informed that two Australian Universities are going to have their campuses in India. It is a part of the internationalisation process of the higher education system in the country.
He said, “Two Australian universities have announced to set up campuses at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City),” Deakin University – a premier institution in Australia, has become the 1st foreign university to receive approval from the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) to set up an International Branch Campus (IBC) in GIFT-IFSC.
It is worth-mentioning here that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 envisions facilitating the top universities in the world to operate within the country. In January, UGC released a draft regulation on the ‘Setting up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions (FHEIs) in India.’
The draft talked about establishing a legislative framework to provide interested foreign universities with special dispensation regarding regulatory, governance, and content norms on par with other autonomous institutions of India.
It has been two months since the draft regulations were released, and development around foreign varsities in India has already gained momentum.
