Mumbai: Admissions to degree colleges came to an end on Thursday with the Mumbai University (MU) declaring the last merit round. College authorities claim they will not accept any more admissions as all the rounds are over now. Students on the waitlist will be considered later based on the availability of seats. Up to 30 students are on the waitlist for self-financed courses in leading colleges of the city. The college authorities claim the students will have to wait as they will start regular classes for the academic year. Marie Fernandes, Principal of St Andrew’s College, Bandra, said, “We will soon begin regular lectures, as we cannot delay the academic year.”
The waitlisted students will get a seat only if there is a vacancy or if a student withdraws his admission, claimed teachers. Meenakshi Mehta, a teacher, said, “The waitlisted students will get seats when a vacancy arises, as it is likely the students withdraw admissions, though it happens rarely. It is difficult to secure a seat in a reputed college in the first place.” The students claim as chances of getting admission in the top-notch desired MU colleges are slim, they want to play safe and have applied to other colleges. Akshay Panchal, a student, said, “I am on the waitlist for Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) course in a reputed college. Now, I have secured admission in another college. I did not want to spoil my chances while waiting for a seat here. So, I applied to another college.”
Sakshi Sen, another student, said, “The admission process has ended. I have no option, but to choose another college.” This year, three merit lists were declared for degree courses in colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University (MU). Courses like BMS, BMM and Arts are in demand, as a large number of students made a beeline for these degree programmes.
