In Tamil Nadu, newly-elected MLAs of the 16th legislative assembly took oath Tuesday morning.
The ceremony took place at Chennai’s Kalaivanar Arangam hall which is serving as the makeshift venue for sessions of the state assembly since the covid pandemic began.
Former Minister K Pitchandi as the pro-tem Speaker administered the oath of office to the new members.
As per assembly rules, the Chief Minister and other Ministers were the first to take oath followed by the Leader of the Opposition, the leaders of parties, ex-Chief Ministers, ex-Speakers, ex-Ministers, Government Whip and then other members in alphabetical order.
The swearing in took place a day after former chief minister and AIADMK leader Edappadi K.Palaniswami was unanimously elected leader of the legislative party to become the leader of opposition in the state assembly.
Elections to the post of speaker and deputy speaker will be held tomorrow.
Senior MLA M Appavu is expected to be sworn in as the speaker and K Pitchandi as the deputy speaker after the ruling DMK on Monday declared them as its candidates to the two top posts in the House.
