Farmers across New Zealand today protested against the government plans to tax cow burps and other greenhouse gas emissions.
Convoys of tractors and farmyard vehicles disrupted traffic in Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch, and other major hubs. The Protestors are demanding the government back away from an animal tax.
Last week, the government proposed a new farm levy as part of a plan to tackle climate change.
Animals produce methane and nitrous oxide as a byproduct of munching on grass and feed. According to reports, methane is responsible for roughly 30 percent of the global rise in temperatures despite being a fraction of the greenhouse gas mix.
