National Democratic Alliance (NDA) vice-presidential candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar will file his nomination today. The last date for filing the nominations is tomorrow and the election will be held on 6th of August. Margaret Alva is the opposition’s candidate for Vice Presidential Election. She will file the nomination tomorrow.
The Vice-President is elected by the members of the Electoral College consisting of the members of both Houses of Parliament. For 16th Vice-Presidential Election, the Electoral College consists of, 233 elected members and 12 nominated members of Rajya Sabha, and 543 elected members of Lok Sabha. The Electoral College comprises a total of 788 members of both Houses of Parliament. The term of Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu is ending on 10th of next month.
Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted the resignation of West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. Mr Kovind has appointed Manipur Governor La. Ganesan to discharge the functions of the Governor of West Bengal, in addition to his own duties.
