The Supreme Court on Thursday directed a CBI probe in the 1994 espionage case against former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan.
The Bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar stated that the report filed by a three-member committee and chaired by former Supreme Court judge, Justice DK Jain, will be transferred to the central agency for further action.
This comes after the Centre lodged a plea seeking re-evaluation of the report filed by a high-level committee regarding the role of erring police officials in the 1994 espionage case relating to Nambi Narayanan.
On April 5, the Centre moved the apex court seeking urgent hearing and consideration of the panel’s report referring to it as a “national issue.”
Moreover, the SC in its ruling today put a stay on circulation of the report for either media or public.
The espionage case had hit the headlines in 1994 and was pertained to allegations of transfer of certain confidential documents on India’s space program to foreign countries by two scientists and four others.
The former ISRO scientist had been acquitted earlier and was awarded ₹50 lakh compensation by the Supreme Court in 2018.
