Muslim women thank PM; Javadekar says previous govts didn’t ban Triple Talaq due to vote bank politics

Muslim women across the country are celebrating the passage of the Triple Talq Bill by the parliament. In the National Capital, a group of women who gathered to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing the historic law, banning the menace of Triple Talaq were addressed by Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar.

Mr Javadekar said the previous governments did not ban the Triple Talaq due to vote bank politics. He said, most of the Muslim countries have already banned it.
Former Union Minister Vijay Goel was also present on the occasion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the passage of the bill in Parliament as a victory of gender justice that will further equality in society. The bill abolishes the practice of instant Triple Talaq.

Mr Modi, said, a historic wrong done to Muslim women has been corrected and an archaic and medieval practice has been confined to the dustbin of history. Mr Modi said, it is an occasion to salute the remarkable courage of those Muslim women who have suffered great wrongs due to the practice of Triple Talaq.

AIR correspondent takes a look at some of the provisions of the bill, Triple Talaq bill, which was passed by the Parliament yesterday, after getting Presidential nod will make the practice of instant Triple Talaq as void and illegal and a cognizable offence.

The offence will be compoundable with the permission of the Magistrate at the instance of the married Muslim woman upon whom Talaq is pronounced. The bill also makes a declaration of Talaq-e-Biddat or pronouncing Talaq three times in spoken, written or through SMS or WhatsApp or any other electronic chat in one sitting, illegal.

Criminalizing the offence, it gives a police officer powers to arrest the offender without requiring a warrant. To check misuse of cognizable nature of the offence, the Triple Talaq bill makes a declaration of  Talaq-e-Biddat only if the complaint is filed by the aggrieved woman or any of her relation by blood or marriage.

A magistrate can grant bail only hearing the aggrieved woman. The aggrieved woman is entitled to demand maintenance for her and her dependent children under the bill.

Earlier, the Modi Government had promulgated the ordinance on Triple Talaq twice, in September 2018 and in February 2019 as the contentious bill remained pending in the Rajya Sabha, though it was passed by the Lok Sabha. More than 20 Islamic nations have already regulated Triple Talaq.
