In a unique initiative, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has roped in a tree surgeon also known as an arborist or arboriculturist to assess old trees and protect them from falling.
According to an official from BMC, city-based Arborist Vaibhav Raje has been appointed in BMC’s D-ward, which includes areas such as Malabar Hill, Tardeo, Peddar Road and other locations in Mumbai. He will study around 100-150 trees of the D-ward and suggest ways to prevent them from falling. As per the plan, the Arborists get a base map on the trees under high-risk and low-risk and then build a road map to work on the trees.
Meanwhile, BMC Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that the officials are trying to promote plantation of indigenous trees which hold the ground for many years.
