Mumbai: Since the stock of water in all seven lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai city is 15 per cent less compared to that in the corresponding period last year, the BMC has decided to impose a 10 per cent water cut from Thursday and it will be in place until July 31, 2019.
Civic officials informed the standing committee that the cut was necessary so that the BMC could ensure water supply until next monsoon. Not only will Mumbai residents have to manage with less water, but the duration of the supply will also diminish by 15 per cent. For instance, if a housing society receives water supply for one hour daily, from Thursday onwards, this supply will be for 45 minutes daily.
Mumbai city receives water supply from seven lakes – Tansa, Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Vihar, Middle Vaitarna and Tulsi. On October 1, the collective water stock in all seven lakes was 13,17,819 millon lakh litres, 15 per cent less than the stock last year on the same date — 14,47,363 million lakh litres. BMC supplies 3,800 million lakh litres to the city daily, as against a daily requirement of 4,200 million lakh litres
