Modi said Jammu and Kashmir’s UT status was temporary, but offered no timeline

Narendra Modi, during his address to the nation, said that Jammu and Kashmir won’t be a Union Territory for a long time, hinting that the statehood will be brought back once “good governance” returns. However, he didn’t give a timeline for it.

On Tuesday, when the Lok Sabha was debating on the scrapping of Article 370 and the bifurcation bill, Home Minister Amit Shah had also said that the statehood will be returned when the situation in the region becomes “normal”. When the Opposition Congress asked the government to define “normal”, Shah took a dig at Congress and said he was sure it won’t take 70 years.
