Met Department issues yellow alert in northern and central districts of Kerala

Widespread intermittent rains continued in many parts of Kerala last night. Four persons lost their lives in the state yesterday following rain-related incidents. Met Department has issued a yellow alert today in eight northern and central districts of the state, including the hilly regions of Wayanad and Idukki.

In Malappuram district, heavy rains inundated several low-lying areas. 14 houses were damaged in the district yesterday and 132 persons were shifted to relief camps. The District Collector has warned people living along the banks of Bharatapuzha and Thoothapuzha rivers to remain alert as the water levels in these rivers are rising.

In Kannur, 18 houses were damaged following heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has issued the first warning to Kerala as water level in the dam is about to reach 136 feet.

The spillway shutters of the dam will be opened once water level reached 136.3 ft. The reservoir is currently receiving an inflow of 4054 cusecs from its catchment areas, while 1867 cusecs are being diverted to Tamil Nadu.
