The market capitalisation of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE)-listed companies reached an all-time high of Rs 220.74 lakh crore on Thursday, May 27, 2021, helped by bullish sentiment in the equity market.
At the close of trade on Thursday, BSE’s market cap stood at Rs 2,20,74,421.11 crore.
Earlier, Ashishkumar Chauhan, CEO of BSE said in a tweet, “Market capitalization of equities of listed companies on BSE reached $3 trillion intraday for the first time. A great milestone on a long journey. Congratulations to all 6.9 crore+ registered investors, 1400+ brokers, 69,000+ MF distributors and 4700+ companies.”
Bombay Stock Exchange
Bombay stock exchange, also known as BSE Limited is not just India’s but Asia’s oldest stock exchange. Established in 1875, the Bombay Stock Exchange became the first Stock Exchange to be recognised by the Indian Government on August 31, 1957, under the Securities Contract Regulation Act.
At present, BSE Limited is the 8th largest stock exchange in the world (New York Stock Exchange being at the top) with an overall market cap of more than Rs 2,20,74,421 Billion as of May 27, 2021.

Contribution of Small-cap and Mid-cap Indices
Mid-cap and Small-cap stocks have outperformed the market since the beginning of this year. The rise in the BSE market cap can be attributed to the 20.78% gain in the mid-cap index since the beginning of this year. Similarly, BSE small-cap index has recorded 28.70% gains during the period which helps BSE to cross the $3 trillion market cap.
Global standing of India
India has outperformed the European powerhouse Germany into the $3-trillion market cap club. The Indian domestic market on Monday joined Canada, France and UK in the $3-trillion market cap club.
Currently, India ranks 8th on the table of most-valued equity markets, ahead of Germany which has a market capitalisation of $2.8 trillion.
