In a game played in unseasonal snow, English heavyweights Manchester City defeated Paris St-Germain 2-0 in the 2nd leg (aggregate score 4-1) at Etihad Stadium to secure their maiden spot in the UEFA Champions League final.
Manchester City created history
Under Pep Guardiola’s guidance, the team has made it to their first-ever UEFA champion league final. Despite being a powerhouse in European football, the team was constantly falling at the UEFA. In the last three seasons, the team has crashed out of the quarter-finals.
Brillant performance by Riyad Mahrez stoped Paris St-Germain (PSG) to make their second consecutive UEFA Champions League final. Mahrez scored both goals for Manchester City. The forward also scored a freekick in the first-leg victory.
Manchester City has been playing exceptionally well with their team combination at its best. Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho have provided stability in the midfield whereas, Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, and Rúben Dias have been firm in the defense.
A disappointing performance by PSG
Manchester City was dominating the 2nd leg, they were throwing bodies in the PSG half and they were constantly testing Navas (PSG goalkeeper). PSG’s talismanic striker, Kylian Mbappe was out of the second leg due to an injury that affected PSG’s attack as Neymar was left alone with no solid support.
As Paris St-Germain was behind by two goals, Angel di Maria lost his temper and was given a red card for a senseless foul on Fernandinho.
Manchester City to face either Chelsea or Real Madrid
Chelsea and Real Madrid will face each other in the 2nd leg of the semifinals on 6 May 2021. The 1st leg ended in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea having the away goal advantage. The winner will meet Manchester City in the final at Attaturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey on 29 May 2021.
