Mumbai: Saki Naka police have booked the owner of a garment washing plant for negligence, which led to the death of a 28-year-old male worker who was trying to remove the clothes from a washing machine. Police claimed the owner of the company had not provided the deceased with proper training and equipment to carry out his job safely. No arrests have been made in the case as the accused is on the run, said police. According to police sources, on May 22, a man approached Saki Naka police station with a death intimation of one of the workers, Amit Kumar Vidyasagar (28). As per the protocol, police began investigating the case and inquired with the hospital as well as the washing plant M G Process, where it was revealed that Vidyasagar was employed for the job without proper training.
Investigations revealed that on May 19, Vidyasagar was working on a factory washing machine at the time of the incident. After the machine had finished its process, Vidyasagar began removing the washed clothes by hand without any equipment. Suddenly, the washing machine restarted and Vidyasagar’s hand got stuck in the machine. Even as his colleagues rushed to help, Vidyasagar was bleeding profusely and became unconscious, said police. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was administered treatment, but succumbed to his injuries three days later.
Police suspected foul play in the case and recorded statements of the other employees, where they realised no employee was given proper uniform and tongs to remove the washed clothes from the machine. “Further investigation revealed that Vidyasagar was hired without experience or training. Moreover, the company owner had not given any equipment like tongs, uniform, gloves and cap. Based on this information, a detailed investigation was initiated and the washing factory’s owner-Gulamgaus Abdul Hamid Shaikh (43) was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for causing death due to negligence (section 304A),” said Kishor Sawant, a senior police inspector of Saki Naka police station. After a case was registered against Shaikh, he fled the city and has been on the run since, said police.
