Mumbai: A 42-year-old Powai resident lost Rs2 lakh, as he fell prey to a lucky draw contest. The victim, Chandraprakash Joshi, said in his complaint at Powai police station the accused frequently asked him to deposit money from Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) mobile payment app and duped him of Rs2 lakh. Police said Joshi, an owner of a food chain was lured with a lucky draw contest, being run by an online marketplace. He was asked to select two options displayed at the screen, which offered the user to win a luxury car or Rs15 lakh as a cash prize.
“The victim was then asked to deposit Rs8,000 as registration fee, and get in touch with one an executive for more details about the contest. When contacted, the accused, who introduced himself as Molay Sharma, first demanded the fees and then assured him to give the prize,” said a cop. In the name of registration fees, Joshi gave Rs2 lakh to Sharma without suspecting him and the lucky draw offers. After consistently giving money to Sharma, when no prizes were delivered, Joshi started making follow-ups, but was given excuses. He realised he was conned, Joshi lodged a complaint on Tuesday. A case of cheating was registered by the victim.
