There is raging controversy in Tamilnadu over a Youtube channel ‘Karuppar Kootam’ which abused Hindu deities including ridiculing Kanda Shasti Kavacham. There was state wide protests against the Youtube channel, from the public, and finally the police were forced, on a complaint by some organisations, to arrest those involved with the Channel, sealed their office, confiscated incriminating materials, hard disks from their office, recently.
This has created a sudden interest in ‘Kanda Sashti Kavacham’ – a song dedicated to the praise of Lord Karthikeya -Muruga as he is popularly known in Tamizhnadu and with his devotees across the world.
Devaraya Swamigal, a staunch devotee of Lord Karthikeya (also known as Skanda/Kanda, Muruga) composed the devotional hymn in Tamizh which is known as Kanda Shashti Kavacham or Skanda Sashti Kavasam (स्कन्दा सष्टि कवचं) in the early 19th Century CE, in Vallore, erstwhile Mysore near Thondai Mandalam. Devaraya Swamigal was a student of Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, an eminent Tamizh Scholar who was also the Guru of U.Ve.Swaminatha Iyer, popularly known in Tamizhnadu as Tamizh Thatha (Grandfather of Tamizh).
This song on Lord Karthikeya is close to the hearts of Hindus in Tamizhnadu and across the globe, most of the houses it is chanted atleast once a day. It is believed that chanting this song daily reduces our bad karma & protects us from all evil.
