Kuwait Considers Joining Maritime Alliance

Kuwait is still studying joining a US-led international maritime coalition for protecting shipping in waterways in the Gulf, Kuwaiti newspaper Al Qabas has reported, citing what it called well-informed sources.

Last month, the UAE and Saudi Arabia announced joining the alliance after an attack on Saudi oil facilities that Riyadh and Washington have blamed on Iran. Bahrain and Britain have earlier joined the coalition.  Al Qabas quoted the same sources as saying that Kuwait is waiting for findings of an ongoing international probe into last week’s attack on the Saudi oil sites. “Afterwards, we will announce our position towards the one behind the attack,” the sources added.

The same sources also ruled out that Kuwait will host more US troops as part of forces Washington said it will send to the Gulf region in response to the latest attack. The September 14 attack, claimed by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Al Houthi militants, have heightened tensions in the Gulf and raised global fears of flow of oil supplies.
