Keralites celebrate traditional new year ‘Vishu’ today

Keralites across the globe are celebrating the traditional new year ‘Vishu’ today, the festival of harvest and prosperity. Vishu festival symbolises the beginning of the spring season. Vishu, the festival of hope and prosperity, is the astronomical New Year of Kerala, marking the sun’s transit into the Medam Rashi.

Lord Krishna is worshipped in this auspicious occasion that resonates with the symbolism of abundance in every sense. The day begins with ‘Vishukkani’, the first thing to be seen on this day, comprising of lord Krishna adored with kani konna flowers, fruits, vegetables, gold, coins etc. Elders of the family offer their blessings in the form of Vishu kaineettam. In major temples like Guruvayur, Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple, Sabarimala etc vishu kani and special rituals are being held today.
