Kochi: The customs said that over 100 kg smuggled gold was taken to Sangli in Maharashtra in the diplomatic baggage gold smuggling case. Rameez and others, who are named as accused in the case, revealed this to the customs sleuths.
A major share of the gold smuggled through diplomatic channel by Swapna Suresh and gang was transported to Sangli, a district in Maharashtra popular for goldsmiths.
Sangli is situated between Kolhapur and Pune and is the major hub for converting smuggled gold into ornaments. Earlier also, Rameez took smuggled gold to Sangli.
Even after getting the information, customs officials were unable to visit Sangli for an investigation amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
Customs officials hope they will uncover more secrets on the gold smuggling after questioning Swapna and Sandeep along with Rameez.
So far, customs officials have received crucial information on smuggling from Rameez.
Customs arrested over 15 people who purchased gold from Rameez. Meanwhile, Rameez claimed he is not involved in the gold smuggling.
