Thiruvananthapuram: Four senior officials in Kerala police has been put under observation by the National Investigation Agency fo r alleged links to diplomatic baggage gold smuggling accused Swapna Suresh. As per reports, NIA has found they had sought help from Swapna. The officials conducted Dubai trips as ‘recommended’ by UAE consulate which was arranged through Swapna. NIA is looking into the return favour they might have done to Swapna.
Swapna had left Kerala four days after the gold was seized at the Thiruvananthapuram airport. By then her photos and news had made headlines in media. However, she still managed to escape from the state. NIA believes she couldn’t have done it without police help.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the state police chief has close connections to Arun Balachandran, Chief Minister’s IT fellow, who had booked rooms for Swapna near the Secretariat. Customs believes that the conspiracy was hatched in his room. Arun was a trustful accomplice of former IT Secretary M Sivasankar. Arun also has close connection to DGP which resulted in the officer turning a fashion model for a magazine.
NIA is probing the alleged terror links in the gold smuggling case. DGP has informed that the smuggling has links to hawala deals and the details were handed over to NIA. In the report, DGP said that Koduvally in Kozhikode is the hub of gold smuggling.
However, the question that still remains unanswered is if Kerala Police had such crucial information, why hadn’t they acted on it.
