A car belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary and Chikkamagaluru MLA CT Ravi, rammed two parked vehicles, killing two men on the spot. The accident happened at Urkehalli bridge near Kunigal bypass at aroud 1:45 am – the wee hours of Tuesday.
The Kunigal police have registered cases under sections 279 (rash driving), 336 (endangering human life by rash or negligent actions) and 304A (death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Ravi also suffered minor injuies.
According to a Kunigal Police Station official, Ravi’s driver was supposedly driving the SUV with speed. The SUV had an accident at Urkehalli bridge. Two cars – a Swift and a Scorpio – were parked on the highway and two men were moving some goods between the two vehicles. At this moment, Ravi’s vehicle hit both the cars, dragging both men for about 50 metres before screeching to a halt. Both victims died on the spot.
The driver escaped before the police could arrive at the accident spot. Ravi was admitted to Vikram Hospital in Bengaluru and is safe.
The BJP state media group has rejected suggestions that Ravi was at the wheel and that he was in an inebriated state.
Later CT Ravi shared a video clarifying: “The incident, which happened in Kunigal last night, is an unfortunate one. I left for Chikmaggaluru around 9:30pm in the night. I was asleep in the car on the way. My driver Akash was behind the wheel. My gunman Raja Nayak was also present in the car. When the vehicle abruptly halted and the airbags opened up, I woke up and realised something happened. I had immense pain on my body and had scratches in my chest, And when I gained proper consciousness, I realised two people had died. I immediately called for an ambulance. I also tried to call the ambulance three to four times as I was not getting any. I also called the police station and then a sub-inspector, along with an ambulance, reached the spot. After all the procedures were completed, and the bodies were taken away, I came to Vikram Hospital to get treatment for my injuries.”
In the aftermath of the accident, Ravi has cancelled all his engagements and will meet the victim’s families.
