Early results from Israel’s election shows another stalemate. With more than half of the votes counted by today morning, the Likud party of prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was clearly leading with a quarter of all votes. The opposition leader, Yair Lapid, had less than 15% votes. However, Netanyahu and Lapid will need to convince rival parties in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, to join them to form a majority government.
That prospect appeared in doubt for both the leaders, suggesting a potential extension of the two-year deadlock, and even an unwanted fifth election. In Israel, 67.2 per cent eligible voters cast their ballots to elect a new Parliament yesterday. This was the fourth parliamentary elections in two-years to elect 120-member Knesset.
