India’s ace shuttler PV Sindhu has been nominated as the ambassador for International Olympics Committee’s ‘believe in sport’ campaign alongside Canadian shuttler Michelle Li. The duo will be working alongside athlete ambassadors from around the globe to raise awareness regarding competition manipulation amongst athletes, officials, and entourage.
PV Sindhu to spread awareness regarding competition manipulation
World Champion PV Sindhu and Michelle Li have also been the global ambassadors for Badminton World Federation’s ‘i am badminton’ campaign since April 2020.
Rio Olympics silver medallist Sindhu said “It is an honour to be nominated by the IOC as an athlete ambassador. I stand alongside my fellow athletes in the fight against any form of cheating or competition manipulation. Together we are stronger.”
In Badminton, competition manipulation or match-fixing includes changing the course or the result of a match which gives an undue advantage to an individual or others.
BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund said: “Competition manipulation has become an increasingly global concern and protecting honest players is a top priority for the BWF. By joining forces with the IOC in nominating two of our most popular players, Pusarla and Li as ambassadors, we believe we can have a positive impact in the fight to protect integrity in sport.”
IOC’s ‘believe in sport’ campaign
The campaign aims to spread awareness regarding competition manipulation amongst athletes, officials, and entourage. The International Olympics Committee has committed to uphold the integrity and the essence of sport in which there is no room for false play, cheating, and competition manipulation.
IOC with the help of international athletes is spreading awareness about the campaign and the need to curb competition manipulation in the modern era.
What is competition manipulation?
Competition manipulation or match-fixing is an intentional setup, act, or omission which is aimed at the false alteration of the match results. This can also be done to alter the competition results. It bends the unpredictable nature of the sports competition intending to provide an undue benefit for individuals or others. Competition manipulation harms clean athletes and the integrity of sports.
