Setting the tone for long-term growth for a resilient, sustainable and green environment, India will participate in COP26.
Prime Minister Modi will pitch for united efforts towards Climate Action at the 26th Conference (COP-26) of Parties titled ‘World Leaders’ Summit along with 120 Heads of States/Governments from around the world.
During this Summit, India and UK are expected to sign the new Green Grids Initiative to mark a merging of flagship interconnection initiatives between both nations as part of their bilateral cooperation.
With India’s climate action to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) related to the Paris climate agreement, the country intends to go in with a strong message with full commitment to COP26.
Speaking to various media sources Alex Ellis, British High Commissioner to India, said that “The COP26 summit is our last best chance to put the world on the path of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.”
“The UK and India work closely on climate change. India’s action on climate is already impressive, with wind and solar capacity quadrupling in the last decade and the PM’s recent announcement of the new National Hydrogen Mission,” the British High Commissioner to India further stated.
India’s Solar Energy Initiatives
Solar energy has taken a central place in India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change with the National Solar Mission as one of its key Missions.
India is a part of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) which was conceived as a coalition of solar-resource-rich countries to address their special energy needs.
India holds the 5th global position in solar power deployment by surpassing Italy. Presently, solar tariff in India is very competitive and has achieved grid parity.
Infact, India’s renewable energy installation capacity reached 101.53 GW. Solar energy contributes for approximately 46% share in the total RE segment, making it the major contributor followed by wind energy (39%), Bio Power (10%) and Small Hydro (5%).
In order to achieve the above target, the Government of India has launched various schemes to encourage the generation of solar power in the country like Solar Park Scheme, VGF Schemes, CPSU Scheme, Defence Scheme, Canal bank & Canal top Scheme, Bundling Scheme, Grid
Connected Solar Rooftop Scheme etc.
India holds the 4th largest renewable power capacity in the world
India has a long-standing tradition of living in harmony with nature and with a culture of deep respect for the planet, the country is taking ambitious action on expanding clean & renewable energy, energy efficiency, afforestation and bio-diversity.
India’s renewable power capacity is the 4th largest in the world as of 2020 and it is growing at the fastest speed among all major countries.
Creating new records in the collective effort against climate change, India is among the top countries in the world in terms of installed renewable energy, wind and solar energy capacity.
At COP26, PM Modi will highlight the need to comprehensively address climate change, focussing on issues including; equitable distribution of carbon space, support for mitigation, adaptation and resilience-building measures, mobilization of finance, technology transfer and importance of sustainable lifestyles for green and inclusive growth.
During the Summit, PM Modi will also meet with all the stakeholders including leaders of partner countries, innovators and Inter-Governmental organizations to explore the possibilities for accelerating India’s clean growth.
