India Pledges 40 Million Doses Of Cancer Vaccine For Indo-Pacific Nations Under GAVI And QUAD Initiatives

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India will contribute 40 million vaccine doses for Indo-Pacific countries under GAVI—the Vaccine Alliance—and QUAD initiatives. Mr Modi was speaking at the Cancer Moonshot Event on the sidelines of the Quad Summit. The initiative aims at the implementation of innovative strategies to prevent, detect, and treat cancer. PM Modi thanked President Biden for organising this event and stated that it reflects the shared determination of the Quad countries to provide affordable, accessible, and quality health care. Prime Minister mentioned that during the COVID pandemic, the group had taken the Quad Vaccine initiative for the Indo-Pacific and expressed happiness that now the group has decided to jointly tackle challenges like cervical cancer.

Mr. Modi said that in cancer care, collaboration is essential for cure. An integrated approach of prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment is necessary to reduce the burden of cancer. PM added that a very cost-effective cervical cancer screening program is underway in India at a mass scale. PM Modi also mentioned that India is running the world’s largest health insurance scheme and special centres have also been set up to make medicines available to everyone at an affordable cost. Prime Minister added that India has also developed its own vaccine for cervical cancer, and new treatment protocols are also being introduced with the help of artificial intelligence.

PM Modi said that India is willing to share its experience and expertise. PM reiterated India’s vision of One Earth, One Health and announced the support of sampling kits, detection kits, and vaccines worth 7.5 million dollars. PM Modi also said that India will cooperate in radiotherapy treatment and capacity building. PM also lauded Quad for its human-centric approach.
