As a part of ongoing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, India on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, dispatches 2500 MT of wheat assistance to war-ravaged Afghanistan via Pakistan in a ceremony held at Amritsar.
The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, along with Afghan Ambassador Farid Mamundzay and World Food Program Country Director Bishaw Parajuli flagged off the first convoy of 50 trucks carrying 2500 MT of wheat transported from ICP Attari (India) to Jalalabad (Afghanistan) by Afghan transporters via Pakistan.
India had earlier signed an agreement with World Food Program for the distribution of 50,000 MT of wheat to Afghanistan.
Expressing happiness over the development, taking to micro-blogging site, Afghanistan Ambassador to India Farid Mamundzay thanked Indian government for their humanitarian assistance when ‘more than 20 million Afghans are facing crisis or worst level of food insecurity in more than 3 decades’.
“I also thank WFP and our mission in India for their contribution to make this ‘worthy cause’ possible under challenging circumstances,” Afghan Ambassador added.
The wheat assistance will be delivered in multiple consignments and will be handed over to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Earlier during his talks with External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian too offered assistance to India in transporting wheat, medicine and other aid to Afghanistan.
India donates 500,000 doses of COVAXIN to Afghanistan
Standing strong towards its commitment of supplying necessary aid to Afghan people, India had so far supplied 500,000 doses of COVAXIN, 13 tons of essential lifesaving medicines and 500 units of winter clothings. The medical and the essential supplies were handed over to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Indira Gandhi Hospital, Kabul.
