IMD Issues Red And Orange Alerts For Many States For Next 4 Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa today. An orange alert has been issued for very heavy rainfall in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, West Rajasthan, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar and northeast regions during the next 4 days. The IMD said, the low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand persists and associated cyclonic circulation in middle and upper tropospheric levels. It is likely to move west-northwestwards across Jharkhand, southeast Uttar Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh and adjoining north Chhattisgarh during the next 48 hours. Some areas of south 24 Parganas and Nadia in West Bengal are still reeling under water-logging due to incessant rains since Thursday evening. Public life is disrupted in South 24 Parganas. Water entered the low-lying areas of Namkhana and Kakdwip. Ponds are almost overflowing. Winds were blowing at a speed of 40 to 50 Kms per hour last night. Mostly affected is the Sunderbans coast. In North 24 Parganas 30 houses were damaged at Taranipur area in Swarupnagar in a tornado within 30 secs yesterday evening. Cultivation is also affected. In Asansol, West Burdwan a car was swept away in the Garui River last night, resulting in the death of the driver. Due to intermittent rains, large areas of Nabadwip in Nadia are waterlogged. At least 10 families have taken shelter at Pranavananda Vidyapeeth, run by Bharat Sevashram. Bankura is also affected. District administrations concerned are taking measures for relief works in the affected areas. Mumbai and its suburbs have been experiencing incessant rainfall with intense spells since morning. Waterlogging has been reported in certain low-lying areas resulting in slower traffic movement. Suburban trains are running normally. Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a red alert of extremely heavy rains for Satara district. It has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai suburban and Thane districts with the prediction of heavy rainfall today. An orange alert has also been issued for Raigad, Pune, Ratnagiri, and Kolhapur districts with the prediction of very heavy rainfall.
