IIT Delhi startup SWATRIC designs Advanced Fabric for Monumental National Flags

SWATRIC, an IIT Delhi startup, has devised numerous advanced fabric structures for the monumental National Flags, Tiranga. At the lab scale, the researchers have successfully revamped the strength of the fabric by 100%.

Last year, SWATRIC and the Flag Foundation of India (FFI) teamed up to find the optimum fabric design and structure for India’s gigantic national flags, taking into account the country’s varied climatic and geographical conditions.

The FFI has already put two separate prototypes of the gigantic National Flag on the field, one in Delhi and the other in Ladakh, using the advanced fabric developed by this IIT Delhi startup.

“The goal is to make the gigantic flag material tough enough to withstand adverse weather without becoming too heavy. We’ll also be delivering ten different prototypes to various sites across the country for installation. Our research is currently in the prototyping stage; the flag’s exact durability will be known in the next few months,” informed Prof. Bipin Kumar, Textile and Fibre Engineering Dept., IIT Delhi, and SWATRIC Mentor.

IIT Delhi is also working on installing a massive National Flag on its campus. By March 2022, the project should be completed. Mr. Naveen Jindal, the founder of the Flag Foundation of India and Chairman of Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL), as well as IIT Delhi alumni, have pledged their support for the project.

”IIT Delhi faculty members have been closely interacting with the Flag Foundation of India, a non-profit organisation formed by Mr. Naveen Jindal,” said Prof V. Ramgopal Rao, Former Director, IIT Delhi.

“They’re looking into a number of different aspects of the national flag. They’re working together to set material criteria for monumental flags, and there are now a lot of field experiments taking place. I’m relieved to learn that the preliminary findings are promising” the director further informed.

The Flag Foundation of India is a non-profit organisation that was established in 1980 under the Society Registration Act. Its main goal is to increase the number of Indians who proudly exhibit the Tiranga (Tricolor).
