Government to invest Rs 20,050 crores till 2024- 2025 to promote the fisheries sector under PMMSY scheme

The government is taking a slew of measures including implementing “Pradhan Mantri MatsyaSampada Yojana (PMMSY)” with plans to invest Rs 20,050 crores from the period of 2020-21 for five years to promote the fisheries sector in the country.

“Presently, a flagship scheme namely “Pradhan Mantri MatsyaSampada Yojana (PMMSY)”- to bring about Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of the fisheries sector in India with the highest-ever estimate investment of Rs 20,050 crores in the fisheries sector is being implemented for a period of 5 years w.e.f. FY 2020-21,” said Giriraj Singh, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandary and Dairying in a reply to a question in Lok Sabha.

“In addition, a dedicated fund namely, ‘Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund’ (FIDF) with a total fund size of Rs.7,522.48 crores has been set up for the creation and strengthening of fisheries infrastructure facilities,” he added.

He points out “The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying during the past five years (2015-16 to 2019-20) implemented a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) on “Blue Revolution: Integrated Development and Management of Fisheries” in all States and Union Territories.

“He notes “To complement and supplement the efforts of the States and UTs for promotion and creation of required infrastructure support for animal husbandry and dairy sectors, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is implementing various schemes, across the country, namely (i) Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) (ii) National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), (iii) Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund (DIDF), (iv) Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund,(v) Supporting Dairy Cooperative and Farmer Producer Organizations engaged in dairy activities, (vi) National Livestock Mission and (vii) Livestock Health and Disease Control.”He further added, “The Schemes and programs implemented by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying inter-alia focuses on the development of pisciculture facilities to augment fish production and productivity, post-harvest infrastructure, storages, ice plants, value addition, transportation, and marketing of fish and fisheries products.”
