Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister Giriraj Singh today criticised senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his recent remark wherein he had demanded a dedicated Ministry for the fishermen. During Question Hour in Lok Sabha, he questioned Mr. Gandhi’s demand saying that the former Congress President is not aware that the Narendra Modi government has already made a separate department for the fishing community.
The Minister said, the Centre has taken several measures for the welfare of the fishermen and over 32 thousand crore rupees have been allocated in the last six years in this regard. He said, under the present regime the growth of the fisheries sector has reached to over 10 per cent unlike the previous government when it was mere 5.27 per cent.
Last month, during his visit to Puducherry, Mr. Gandhi had raised this issue. Later, he defended his remarks saying he wants an independent ministry for fishermen instead of a department which exists today.
