Mumbai: Since the conclusion of the annual 11-day Ganeshotsav on Sunday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected a total of 8.41 lakh kilograms of ‘nirmalya’ (flowers and leaves offered to the deity) from all 24 wards of the city. Narendra Barde, Ganeshotsav preparation coordinator from the BMC told The Free Press Journal the nirmalya will be composted by the wards. Another senior civic official said, each year, the manure generated from nirmalya is used in civic gardens.
From G-North ward, under which the Dadar and Mahim beaches fall, 1.65 lakh kilograms of nirmalya has been collected. Every year, lakhs of devotees come here for visarjan. The second ward to have collected a substantial amount of nirmalya is Andheri West ward, with 1.05 lakh kgs. The Juhu and Versova beaches come under this ward. Barde added, around 6,500 civic workers and 2,500 civic officials have been deployed across Mumbai’s seashores and artificial lakes. Beaches, lakes and artificial lake cleaning operations are underway since Monday morning. As per civic data, on the eleventh day of Ganeshutsav, Ganesh idols from 38,543 households and 7,475 sarvajanik idols were immersed at various spots in Mumbai.
