FYJC admissions extended, colleges unhappy

Mumbai: Students will now have more time to secure admission for the First Year Junior College (FYJC) of the Mumbai University (MU), as the process has been extended by the state education department. The students can now fill up the parts 1 and 2 of the online application forms till July 4, instead of the earlier June 23-deadline. Junior college authorities have opposed this extension, claiming it will drag the admission process unnecessarily and delay the academic year. This extension has come as the state initiated 16 per cent reservation of seats under the Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) and 10 per cent for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) this year. The deadline extension will help students collate necessary documents related to quotas and apply under the reserved category, claim sources.

Students have been given three months to get their original caste certificates or financial documents to be eligible under this quota, stated the circular of the department. A senior officer of the department said, “Students can secure admissions by submitting an undertaking while applying under these quotas. They can then submit their original caste certificates or financial proofs within three months.” Junior College authorities have opposed the extension of the deadline, claiming the process will be dragged unnecessarily. A principal of a suburban college said, “The FYJC admission process gets dragged every year and carries on till mid-August. This affects our academic cycle, as we continuously accept admissions.

The state should have thought about the requirements for the quotas earlier instead of extending the process now.” Initially, the FYJC admission process was supposed to be completed by August 3, but now, it has been extended till August 14. Also, the first come first served (FCFS) admission rounds will be conducted after August 14, depending on the availability of vacant seats in junior colleges.
