Final Stage of Rescue Ops: PM Modi Prays For Sujith’s Safety

2-Year-Old Surjith Slips Further Down Borewell in TN, Struck at 90 Feet; Rescuers Digging Parallel Hole

The two-year old fell into an abandoned borewell near Tiruchirappalli

Rescue operations to save Sujith Wilson is in its final stage with a 60-feet pit dug near the borewell at Nadukattupatti, reported news agency ANI. The drilling by a borewell drilling machine is complete and further drilling is being done by a rig machine.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to share his prayers for the two-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in Nadukattupatti of Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu on 25 October.

In the tweet PM Modi also said that he has spoken to the Tamil Nadu chief minister and that ‘every effort is being made to ensure that Sujith is safe’.

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said on Monday, 28 October, that operations to rescue Sujith will reach its final stages in the next four to five hours, news agency ANI reported. The boy had fallen into a 600-feet-deep borewell while playing near his house at Nadukattupatti on Friday evening.

Rescue operations to save the boy entered the fourth day on Monday and special prayers were held across the state for his safety.

Panneerselvam said that the presence of hard rocks in the area was causing a delay in the drilling process. A rig machine was being used to carry out the drilling near the well but it was damaged due to the presence of rocks.

Following this, a high-speed engine was brought for drilling from Ramanathapuram, ANI reported, quoting Panneerselvam.

“This machine is currently in operation. This machine is capable of drilling 10 feet per hour. The 35-foot hole has been drilled so far,” he added.

Sujith has fainted, but is breathing, news agency PTI reported quoting officials. After completion of the drilling, a tunnel-like structure would be created for the use of fire service personnel to reach the child with an oxygen cylinder.

Steps have been taken to prevent the child from falling down further from 90 feet, the officials told Media.

State Health and Family Welfare Minister C Vijayabaskar and Tourism Minister ‘Vellamandi’ N Nagarajan, who have been camping at the site since Friday night, said all efforts were on to rescue the child.

Celebrities and politicians also joined thousands of people in praying for the wellbeing of the boy.

Tamil actor-politicians Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan also expressed hope that the boy would be safely rescued.Speaking to reporters at his residence, Rajinikanth said, “I pray for the safe rescue of the boy. Parents should take care of children and precautionary measures should have been taken,” he said.

Haasan expressed concern over repeated incidents of children falling into defunct borewells.

“Efforts to rescue the child who is in danger should succeed. The government should impose hefty fine on those who left borewells open,” he tweeted.
