Farm Bills row: Farmers stage protest near India Gate in Delhi, tractor set ablaze

A day after President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to three contentious agriculture-related ordinances, the farmers’ protests have intensified against the new farm laws. A tractor was set on fire by the protesting farmers near India Gate in the national capital on Monday.

The incident took place around 7:30 am when a small group of farmers entered the India Gate area and burned down their tractor as a sign of the protest. However, the Delhi police rushed to the spot and the tractor was removed after the fire was doused.

The movement towards the India Gate has been restricted due to the farmers’ protest and the vehicles entering the area are being thoroughly checked.

Meanwhile, several farmers’ organisations have announced dawn-to-dusk bandh in Karnataka today after the state legislative Assembly on September 26 passed the APMC Act and the Land Reforms Act.

Reacting to the bandh call, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had on Sunday asserted that his government was pro-farmers and said that there was no ‘scope’ for the agitation.

Punjab CM to stage sit-in against new farm laws

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh will stage a sit-in protest against the Farm Acts today at Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of Bhagat Singh.

Terming President’s assent to the farm Bills as “unfortunate and distressing”, Amarinder Singh said his government is exploring all options, including possible amendments to the state laws, to protect the interests of the farmers.

The Punjab government was already in consultation with legal and agricultural experts, and all those impacted by the Central government’s “calamitous” legislations, to decide on the future course of action, he said.
