Cyclone Amphan Updates: Restoration work underway in Kolkata, says NDRF Chief

Cyclone Amphan, one of the strongest cyclonic storms in decades, caused havoc in the state of West Bengal and Odisha with a wind speed of 185 kmph. It triggered torrential rains across Kolkata and other regions.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee during a press briefing yesterday said that the situation is more worrying than the coronavirus pandemic. Around 10 to 12 people had lost their lives, she said. Amphan, which became a severe cyclonic storm yesterday, began its landfall in the Bay of Bengal between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm. Reports mentioned that 5,500 houses were damaged in one district of West Bengal.

The state of Odisha reported two deaths. Bangladesh, which had moved over two million people to shelter homes confirmed six deaths which include a five-year-old boy.
